Exercise Riding

Do you have horseback riding experience?

An important aspect of our program is that of Exercise Rider. Exercise Riders are needed to provide ongoing stimulation and exercise with our SARI horses. The following explains the process of becoming an Exercise Rider:

  • volunteer in the regular riding program for a minimum of 3 months

  • complete an Exercise Rider application for submission to the Head Instructor

  • complete a riding assessment competently being able to walk, trot and canter, ride in a two-point position and get a horse on the bit

  • necessary knowledge is basic horse first aid (colic, thrush, wounds and lameness) and be able to comfortably saddle, bridle, and put on boots and polo wraps

More than any of the skills an exercise rider demonstrates, we are especially looking for commitment and attitude. The SARI horses work very hard and need someone who will play with them and love them. We require riders who will develop a relationship with their horse and give them a break from the grinding monotony of the work that they do. You would be required to partner with your assigned horse. Training is the role of the Head Instructor.
You would be required to work with the horses through riding or working on the ground (play with toys, work with leading and sidewalking and at the mounting block) two to three times a week. In the summer they are taken on hacks (trail rides) in the woods and fields around the property. We desire that our horses get as much pleasure out of their activities as possible.

Part of the commitment of an Exercise Rider is to meet once every 2 months for ongoing training and to assure that horses' and riders' needs are being met. Our SARI Exercise Riders' devotion is amazing and the horses' state of health and mind are a testament to that devotion.
